Ruled by the Barranor Familly, the only family whom almost never step foot in their own district. The last visit from any Barranor family to their district was allegedly six years ago, when Owren Barranor came to visit Constable Meross. His cart was escorted by all ten Constables from the West Gate to the house and then from the house to the West gate.
Barranor is the poorest of all districts, but a promizing new Gate that would open to the South Farmland area may change this over the next decade. Its laws are barbaric, especially the one that prevents anyone from leaving the district without a special blue Ticket, which are distributed arbitrarily.
This area is the poorest and slummiest of all districts.
This district is located on the South-West side of the city, offers no entrance through the Main Wall, but has three different entrances to other districts. To exit the city, one must travel through the West side Khalahan District to exit West, or go East to the Fuller District so they can exit to the South.
Ruled by the Barranor Family:
Most of them are Humans, but there are a few Half-Breed in their ranks.
They almost never visit their own District and they are the only Noble Lord Family to not have at least one of them living in their own District.
Tax rate: 50%
This area's population is roughly 6,500 and the racial breakdown is much different than the others.
Average citizen's income per month: 35 sp.
Racial Breakdown of Barranor:
(01-48) Humans: 48%
(49-59) Dwarf: 11%
(60-64) Halfling: 5%
(65-68) Elf: 4%
(69-76) Dragonborn: 8%
(77-82) Half-Elf: 6%
(83-86) Half-Orc: 4%
(87-90) Gnome: 4%
(91-92) Thiefling: 2%
(93-00) Others: 8%
Sub-Laws:
- Obey all orders from a Constables or face punishment.
- Speaking ill of, lying to, bothering, stealing from, and disrespecting; a constable is all punishable offenses.
- Gates open at strict hours only, otherwise it costs 100 GP to have them open.
- Never go in the Forbidden Lake
- By Decree of the Barranor Family, all Constable are authorized to enter any and all dwellings in Barranor at any time they want.
- Official Gate Ticket is required to Exit (but not to enter) the district at any Gates.
- Tickets can only be acquired by talking to one of the Constables and they are sole judges to decide if they will give it or not. It's common knowledge that tickets are usually given to people who have something to come back for. Otherwise, offering something valuable (not gold, since they'd usually take it before you even ask for the ticket) or by offering services or favors.
Other Regulations:
- Only Constables may own Slaves.
Constable-Regulations/Bylaws:
- Any attack against a Constable servants or family is an attack against a Constable.
- Do not damage the Tree of Hope
- Do not cut down Apple Trees
- You cannot physically hurt, violate, or assault anyone on a Pillory, except those on a the Main Stock, and doing so at your own risk of retribution.
Punishments:
1) Stock: Usually a few hours spent naked on one of the many, many stock displays across the district. It sounds worse than it is, mainly a few hours spent on your own, usually no body will come to bother you, and friends will likely spend time chatting while this last.
2) Main Stock + Lashes: There is one specific Stock display where the perpetrator will receive a number of Whip lashes based on the crime committed. This particular stock display is the only one where people will throw rotten vegetables, shit or other things at you, or where people will come and hurt you in many different ways, including rape, because this is usually the punishment for murdering someone or taking actions against the Constables or the Barranor family. It any of those three cases, it means one or more Constables will be angry and mad, and they will harass, bully, even beat up other people a lot more than they would usually do. Or, it would mean a sudden Tax raid, where the constables will enter every dwelling and take any coins they may find. They do provide some food and water for those who would spend too long on the Stocks.
There are no other punishment, only the length of time spent on a stock determines how severe your crime was.
- The current longest time spent on a Stock record belongs to a man known as Calbourn who allegedly raped a Constable. He spent 4 days on the Main Stock and was inflicted 30 Whip lashes.
Description:
Its warden do as they please with anyone within their walls.
The Tax in this area is so high, everyone is poorer than poor.
The area is also left unprotected with nothing but a single unit of 10 Constables to "Keep the peace" as they call it.
The only perk of this District is that housing does not cost anything, unlike other districts where people must pay a renting fee or buy their own house. When people can't pay their rent or taxes in other districts, they often end up in Barranor to avoid sleeping in the streets, hoping they'd be able to save up a little and return to their previous district or another, but very few ever make it.
Trading in goods and services is the best currency here and most people survive this way with very little coins going through their hands, except a few taverns and brothels, where more than 75% of all coins earned by the citizen will end up.
Entrances:
* Note: Asking to have a gate open at any other time would cost 100 GP.
West Gate:
Connects with the Khalahan District (Opens at Noon, for 5 to 10 minutes, however long it takes for everyone waiting to go through, and again at Dusk to let them back in)
Every day at Noon, lots of people (who has tickets) goes out and very few comes in. Mostly, they are going to trade some fruits and vegetables (apples mostly) or some other trinkets, toys or items made by the neighborhood of whomever is allowed to leave so they can go sell or trade those things.
North Gate:
Connects with the Kazimar District (Opens at Sunrise and at Sunset, for about 5 to 10 minutes)
Every morning, a lot of Sailors will pay to sit in one of many chariot that will bring them to the docks, where most will join a fisherman crew for the day. Sometimes, other chariots will be waiting to carry people to other places where they could work, such as dangerous construction sites, where only the most desperate would want to work for. They must usually pay to get on those chariots, just so they can get paid for their work, which of course reduces the overall profit, but it's still some revenue. The rules are clear for anyone who sits in any chariot; the exact same amount of people must come back. Special chariot that would bring one or more sailor to a boat that would leave for more than one day, would have to bring them all back when the boat returns. If a chariot returns with les people than it left with, that particular chariot (its owner) will not be allowed to take and hire anyone from Barranor for many days or weeks, putting all those people out of work for a while, so everyone who do get on those, will make sure everyone will return with them, after all, it would put their jobs at stake.
East Gate:
Connects with the Fuller District (Opens at Sunrise, and again at Sunset, for about 5 to 10 minutes)
Similar to the North Gate, many chariots from employers will take people out of Barranor, only to bring them back. Most of the chariot here will carry the workers to the farmland and the South Mine for the day.
Persons of Interest:
Calbourn (#1):
He's a Human, average height. Rumor says he used to be a ranger working directly for the Emperor.
Known for raping a Constable and spending 4 days on the Main Stock, about 1 year ago.
He's one of three Dog breeders in the district and provides for about 20% of the food chain with his Dog Meat.
Tchignak(#4):
Nasz(#4):
The Apple Lady (#29) :: She's not quite human (Nature DC 25 to know her race) although she looks a lot like a human teenage girl, but everyone knows she's older than she looks, since she looked exactly the same when she moved to Barranor right after the End of Magic Era. She settled in the
small Well-House located in the middle of what was the only grass covered ground in Barranor. People say she used to be a Druid before the End of Magic Era. She planted apple tress and cared for them for over five years before they began providing apples in abundance. Despite multiple attempts by a few frustrated, or simply ill intended people, to try and cut her trees, she managed to save most of them. It is rumored that she had planted over 30 tress, but she couldn't protect all of them from being cut into wood by other locals. She always had a small animal by her side or in her house, some say it used to be a large cat back in the days and now it's a very large frog. Rumor has it she uses her magic (although it doesn't work as much as it should) to care for those trees. She is very liked by the people and everyone around where she lives would probably defend her if needed.

Constable Flauhg's House
#3:
The Red Moon (Maleekym Guild) :: This is the largest brothel/tavern/inn of the Barranor district. It offer a large variety of beer, whine and food, as much as it offers a few modest rooms to stay, with or without company. Obviously, their main attraction is the girls they can offer, Human girls only, although one may not be provided with underage girls (under 12 yo). For anyone not living in that district, it would probably be like eating a pair of sandals and drinking horse piss, but to the locals, it's considered high quality food and drinks, for reasonably affordable prices. Their location is ideal for importing such food and drinks from the neighboring district. The patron of this place are the wealthiest family in Barranor; Josh, the owner, and his two wives; Charlotte and Freya, and their 6 kids; Josh Jr (19 yo), Charlene (17 yo), Brutus (16 yo), Genevieve (13 yo), Karl (10 yo), and the latest Odette (8 yo). It is believed that Josh has had conflicts with the Maleekym and part of his brothel was set on fire once, but somehow they must have come to an understanding. It is unknown how much money they must pay the Maleekym, but they are inevitably one of their main source of revenue, but they also get a lot of them as clients, so it keep the economy rolling.
#4:
The Jack Ass (Independant) :: This Tavern offers typical beer at good price, but also offers better quality beer, and sometimes fine whine, all depending on the supply they manage to get their hands on. The owner is a small Kobold called Tchignak, who was allegedly a very powerful wizard before the End of Magic era. Some claims to have seen him work a spell or two here and there. His tavern also offers a few rooms, usually for free if one drinks enough during his stay. It's uncertain as to why the Maleekym didn't assassinate him, or burn his establishment down, but rumor says they tried a few times to do either of those things, and as much as the fire got big nearby the building, even inside the second time, the walls and furniture simply didn't burn. It is also rumored that within 1 or 2 days following any assassination or arson attempts, the Maleekym lost around 20 members overnight. No one really know how or why that happened, but it is safe to assume they decided to leave Tchignak alone.
#5:
The Cubster (Maleekym Guild) :: This brothel is not as big and classy as the Red Moon, but it offers sex in all forms. One may find a human, but they will mostly find anything but. Girls, and some boys, of all ages and race can be found and they will give anyone a good time for just a few coins. The owner is a very exotic and beautiful (to some people's taste) Dragonborn called Nasz. She is for sale as much as anyone working in that place, no exceptions. Even the musician has to be on the menu if they want to perform in there. This is the only place where people from other district are seen visiting. Rumor has it that those visitors are using a secret underground tunnel to get into and out of the place, but apparently, even the Maleekym aren't allowed to use that tunnel.
#6:
Constable Meross's house (Constable) :: His house has the best Mill in Barranor and he is very selective as to whom can use it.
#7:
Dark Star Monastery (Independent) :: They are religious monks and they lime like hermits. They often take care of orphans and some of them do come out sometimes in groups of 4 or 5, walking down the streets to give some food to the poorest of the poor. Rumor has it that their garden is much too small to provide food for all the people living within its walls, but no body really knows where they get more food or how they can survive on so little.
#8:
The Melody (Maleekym) :: If you like a good Rat-Burgers with a cheap beer for only 4 copper coins, this is the place. The owner will pay 1 Copper Coin to anyone brings him a live rat. Like all other taverns, they brew their own beer and the building is big enough to accommodate 40 people comfortably. The owner is a Red Bearded bald Human called Pete. Rumor has it Pete is a very well trained Monk and no one should mess with him.
#9:
The Wishing Well (Maleekym) :: Located in the middle of what has now become the market place, the well still provides water to its people. Before the End of Magic era, it was said that anyone who'd throw two of their most prized valuable items, and/or one you can barely survive without, into the well and shout their wish for all to hear, that their wish would come true. Countless stories of people making wishes that did come true within a few days are still circulating, but since the End of Magic, there were fewer and fewer new stories until people stopped believing. The market place that grew around the well has became the central place for everyone to try and sell whatever they craft, from children toys, clothing, weapons and armor, all forms of arts, and some food and fruits of course. It's also the most lit area of all Barranor with the longest array of strong stone houses surrounding the whole thing.
#10:
Future Gate :: The area against the wall is filled with ladders and scaffoldings that are not to be climb on unless you are an employee. As the new main wall grows longer to the south, outside, a new gate is supposed to be added, but it is said that before anyone can walk through that gate, it'll take another two years. Non the less, those scaffolding makes it relatively easy to exit the city if one is willing to risk getting caught by a Wall Guard, or worse, by a Barranor Constable.
#11:
The Red Barrel (Red Gates Guild) :: The best beer in Barranor can be found there.
#12:
Small Market place with a well on the south side
#13:
Cathedralof Phandrak, with its Catacomb underneath.
#14:
Small Market place with a well on the east side
#15:
The Heaven (Red Gates Guild) :: This is a slum of houses piled against each other and with time, what used to be about 40 houses became one big building filled with almost individual apartments and rooms, all connected to each other with tunnels, traps, secret path between walls and more.
#16:
The Chop House (Red Gates Guild) :: They breed rabbits, kill them for meat and use the fur for clothing.
#17: Main Stock Display
#18:
The triple Line :: A series of housing all connected and forming three long line with no way out, no alley, no path, unless you know your way through the dwellings. As one of the Ghettos, we can find more Half-Elf, Half-Orcs and other races in this area than anywhere else in Barranor.
#19:
The Boiling Sand Stones :: Huge boulders huddled together were left untouched and buildings were build around it. Some of them are as high as a house. The stones become so hot during hot summer days, one could boil an egg on them. Water also accumulates in the center and sometimes, during very hot summer day, the water boils. Rumor has it that under one of those stones would be a tunnel leading to a treasure of some sort, but no one's ever been able to move the stones to prove it.
#20:
The Tree of Hope :: A unique and very special acid tree. Constable Ryan said that it would be a crime severely punished if anyone damaged it in any ways. Probably because it's a nice view from his house and he wants to keep it that way. But mostly, that tree still stands because whenever someone tries to cut into it, the tree's sap will melt the axe and beware if it touches your skin. Few were able to collect its sap safely and sold it or used it for multiple purpose, even as poison, but for the past year or so, Ryan made it forbidden and only the braves would dare collect its sap. The process taking at least a few minutes to achieve, it's virtually impossible to do so without one person screaming 'Scoundrel'. Ryan has been known to hurt and punish everyone around the tree every time he found out a new cut in it, so people learned the hard way that it was in their best interest to stop others from taking the sap. People even started avoiding getting water from that well, and it became much of a homeless people's area, filled with tents instead of markets.
#21:
Constable Ryan's house
#22:
Constable Nate's house
#23:
Constable Grim's house :: A huge, yet mini castle like mansion on the corner of the street and the stream. Depending of the wind's direction, it will either smell very good in general due to the Orchard, but when the winds blow west, then it smells really bad due to the lake and steam.
#24:
Constable Nam's house
#25:
Constable Hell's house
#26:
Constable Karlos's house
#27:
Constable Gore's house
#28:
Constable Bug's house
#29:
The Apple Tree line and the Apple Lady :: The only place in Barrador where you can find trees, and not just any trees; Appel Trees. Those trees produces a lot, and a lot of apples, every single day, all year long. This streak of 13 trees produces enough apple to feed half of all Barranor all year long, although more during summer and less during winter when the trees production is reduced to half as much. Like everything else in Barranor, those trees don't belong to anyone and there is no law against picking them, but everyone knows who's taking care of those trees the most; The Apple Lady. This area is still covered with grass and gets muddy as soon as it rains. The local got used to that, but not everyone enjoys a walk in that park. It's also filled with children at all time, running, screaming, playing and is a great place to get hit on the head by a falling apple. A lot of the locals makes a living by climbing and picking the apples off the three to go and trade them for other kind of food at the markets, and not everyone has the patience or skill to work those those very huge and very high trees. Many are known to fall to their demise as they tried to pick apples in the higher branches, which can reach as high as 15 meters.
#30:
The Stream :: Coursing through Barranor from near the center of the West wall and exiting near the center of the North wall, the stream carries just about as much shit and piss as any outhouse. The smell isn't as bad as it could be because the flow is also pretty strong, except around the pond formed in the middle. Anyone living within 30 meters of the pond can tell you about the foul smell, and anyone living within 10 meters of the stream as well. Most fish sold in Barranor comes from that stream although they all claim the contrary. Rumor has it, there is a ship sunk at the center of the pond, some 20 meters down and is protected by a creature living in it, but no one can say what the creature looks like and it has been more than 10 years since anyone claims a sighing of that monster, which was usually a large shadow seen swimming within the pond on rainy days when the water is a little clearer than usual.
#31:
The Forbidden Lake :: Another mysterious attraction in Barranor is the Forbidden Lake. Some underground streams, probably the same veins that provides water down all the wells in the city, somehow caused this lake in almost in the plain center of Barranor. Rumor wants that Ghateelock's very first settlement was next to that lake some 500 years ago and slowly grew into what it is today. A large stone stands in the center of the lake and is being harvested by the Emperor's Alchemists. The Alchemists used to harvest something from that stone once every month, but since the End of Magic Era, the harvesting has stopped, which leads to think whatever was growing on that stone was magical in nature, but no one really knows what it was and no one really feels the need to go and take a swim in there to find out. It used to be a Ghateelock Main law not to go in that lake and although it is nothing more than a district law that would get you to the Pillory now a day, most people still have the Mine as punishment in their heads should they think about taking a swim.
#32:
The Tower of Krömm :: Located near the North-East side of the Steam's pond, the stone tower is almost 40 meters high. It has no door at the base and no windows until one reach almost the top of it, where a large ring surround the tower before those windows, making it almost impossible to climb (DC 30, Disadvantage when moist or on rainy days). No one knows who lives there and what's the history (DC 25) of that tower, but every once in a while, someone claims they saw a shadow or a silhouette through one of the windows or even on the roof's dent, but to get even a glimpse of something in there, one must be looking from very far so in all cases, it's too far to make anything of what one would have truly seen.
#33:
Where-street :: One of the very few streets that stays lit all nights. It used to be a street filled with warehouses aligned with the mill, but it grew into a ghettos, mainly due to the Triple Line behind right next to it. The Where-Market as they call it, located at the beginning of this street is the second best market to find food, and fish. The one who trade/sell food a this market knows everyone from the Triple Line prefers to go there, than walk all the way to the Wishing Well Market.
#34:
The Ghettos's Dog House :: You thought the stream smelled bad, you haven't walk by that Dog House. After a fire burned down a few houses many years ago, someone thought it would be a good idea to make an open Dog House yard. With fences between every house around to prevent the dogs from running off, this shit yard smells worse than a months old corpse full of shit. A few resident around the yard takes care of the dogs as best they can, but no one of them seems to be really skilled for the task, and the other few who allegedly knows how to cut them open and make meat of them, aren't as skilled as they think they are either. It's still food in the end, but many are known to have gotten sick from eating it.
#35:
Deer Den :: Another small block of people who decided to join effort in raising some cattle's. Apparently, Deers are a lot less messy than dogs, but the total quantity of meat is still less since they take longer to breed and multiply, and the cost is apparently greater. Non the less, this meat is much better tasting than dogs, if only they could make more.
#36:
Dog House - Under Construction :: Nothing very special about this. It will take a few months, but there will be 7 new houses to accommodate many more people. This land used to be the backyard of Maross's house, but they moved the fence wall closer to make place for new houses around what will become a new Kennel to breed Dogs for meat. No one knows if Maross is happy about it or not since he lost the outdoor space him and the other Constable were known to spar regularly. They can probably do that somewhere else.
#37:
Five High :: Where the Red Gates Guild have The Heaven, the Maleekym had Five High until the Scarecrow took it from them. It probably have multiple secret passages, doors, hatches everywhere, just like The Heaven and house a lot of people. If it wasn't the Maleekym's Head Quarter, it was definitely the best place to crash for the Guild. Now the Scarecrow owns it and they probably had enough time to get to know most of its secret and they use it a lot already. Five High is also one of the tallest building, definitely the tallest housing building that isn't one of the small mansion or castles in Barranor. With its Five story high, it't like buildings were built on top of other buildings and they say, people can see most of the Fuller District from the windows, and even better from the roof.
#38:
The Orchard :: You want blueberry of various kinds or sunflower seeds, this is where you find them. Surrounded by fences, the entire orchard belongs to Shaan, a Drow Elf who used to be a Constable in Barranor before the End of Magic Era. About one year into the new Era, something happened and Maross announced that Shaan was no longer a Constable, but he was allowed to keep his entire house with the Orchard. It was also announced that Shaan had full authority in his house and within the fences of his orchard, acting almost as if it was his own little District within Barranor. Anyone stepping foot in his orchard or stealing from him have been known to be found swiftly and punished severely, even more so if they were caught within Shaan's Orchard. Neighbor often complain about the moans and screams of pain often heard coming from Shaan's house. They say it's probably some poor idiot who dared enter his domain. Rumor has it that Shaan was removed from duty because he killed too many people in ambiguous circumstances that weren't necessarily self-defense, but that he managed to stretch the limit of the interpretation just enough to get away with it. Another more recent rumor started circulating that Shaan can still use his magic without hindrance, which could explain why no one's ever been able to get away with stealing from the Orchard. Regardless of any rumors, it is estimated that The Orchard is always in perfect mint condition, providing the grapes in abundance, more so than normal, and all year around. Any other orchard of similar size would barely produce half the amount Shaan does and that's on a good year. Shaan doesn't bother making wine and everything is sold to some Nobleman outside of Barranor, apparently to make one of the finest wine of Ghateelock. Another interesting thing is that when someone can get past the screams and moans at night, living around The Orchard is probably the most olfactory quality of life in Barranor. The smell of the Orchard carries around in the entire block from the gate to the lake to the bridge. Shaan is known to fights with a double bladed scimitar.
#39:
Fish Market :: Probably the best place to find fresh fish from the lake and stream. It's smelly, but when cooked, it's just fish like any other.
#40:
Fhordax's Smith and Horses :: Although there are a few smiths in the district, Fhordax has the biggest forges and the best equipment, along with a team of metal working employee. They mostly forge tools, carts, and horseshoes, but they certainly can craft weapons when paid in full, and in advance for custom work. They sell everything that isn't a weapon or armor, much cheaper than anywhere in Ghateelock, which does attract the occasional clients from outside the district, but you will pay your weapons and armor at least 15% to 20% more to anyone not from the Maleekym Guild. It is well known that Fhordax was controlled by the Maleekym and with the recent take over by the Scarecrows, his position is unknown. Most people think the Scarecrow can never take over this sector because Fhordax will never yield to them. Many fears the whole place will go up in flames sooner than later. Rumor has it Fhordax keeps a bunch of exotic sex slaves in his basement.
#41:
Stone Block :: This area was called Stone Block mainly because all the houses are fully made of stones in this section, but also because a Dwarf called Stone lives in that area. Something happened a long time ago that made his name famous across the district and somehow, it became his spot, his 'block'.
#42:
Elven Side :: While the domain where Constable Grim lives was once the house of an Elven ambassador, the area behind it was design by elves, for elves. Those houses are huge and most of the 4% of Elves in Barranor lives in these houses, but they are large families and the space in those houses isn't wasted. If one's looking for an elf, this is where they should start looking.
#43:
Noble Hill :: You thought Barranor was all slum? It wasn't always like that. Noble Hill is a set of huge houses like mansion for nobles many many many years ago. The sad thing is they still belong to Noble Families across the city, yet none of them lives in those houses. They are instead filled with servants and slaves that keep those specific house clean and in acceptable condition, as well as leaving Barranor every morning to come back at dusk after a long day servicing their masters in other districts. This is probably the best place to make some gold for the most daring thieves, although most truly valuable things that could be taken are already gone and only the largest and heaviest things are left, like huge paintings, large statues, and so on. The two houses at the top belongs to the Barranor Family themselves, but like all others, only servants live in those houses. Everyone thinks it's an awful waste of space to keep those luxurious houses where ten times more normal houses could be built. Rumor has it that a Dragon lives under that hill, in a secret cave.
